Beautiful People #25-The June Edition

So, today I am participating in this month's Beautiful People. In case you don't know, Beautiful People is a linkup where people talk about their characters, hosted by the lovely Cait @ Paper Fury and the amazing Skye @ Further Up and Further In. If you'd like to know more, please check out the links to their sites above.

I am sticking with my main WIP, the Art of War series, but I will be talking about a character I haven't mentioned too much (comparatively, at least), Jor Sangenken, Lili's foster-mother and Ashlin's girlfriend.

1. What's their favourite place they've ever visited?
Jor's favorite place she's ever visited...hmm. Being general, I suppose her favourite place is Kaltewirin, the land of the wise ones, where she now lives. But I think that has a lot to do with Ashlin. Being more specific, I think Jor's favorite place to have visited in Kaltewirin would have to be Narcissus Plain. It is a small grassland that is considered sacred both within and without Kaltewirin. When Jor went there, she just felt such a feeling of peace and contentment that she had never felt anywhere else, and it made quite the impression. She'll take almost any excuse to go there again.

2. What's one mistake they made that they learned from?
One of the more memorable mistakes that she's learned from is letting someone who she doesn't absolutely trust know her weaknesses. In her home country, Kayakarme, when she was younger, she let someone who wasn't trustworthy know her weaknesses, and now she has no choice but to oblige them when they ask her for a favor.

3. What was their favourite subject in school? Or favourite thing to learn about?
Jor was too high-ranking to attend school, she had a tutor instead. But her favourite thing to learn about...well there were multiple things. Some of them were the history of Orthion (her world) and politics within her country, and in Tiamat (the center of Orthion).

4. What's their favourite flower/growing thing?
She isn't much for flowers, though she thinks they're pretty. On the other hand, her primary weapons besides her daggers are wooden staffs, and she is particular about what kind of wood is used for them; she makes these herself. Her favorite is Aenanori, a type of ironwood, meaning it is quite hard and heavy, and doesn't splinter if it breaks.

5. Have they ever made someone cry? What happened?
She's made Ashlin cry by accident, when they have one of their few fights or Jor scared Ashlin by being reckless. She made Lili cry once...but I can't tell you why (spoilers).

6. Would you consider them a reliable or unreliable narrator?
Well...none of my characters are exactly narrating, because I use mostly omniscient third person. But I do focus on the character's viewpoints and thoughts, so in that context, I would say that Jor seems reliable, but isn't actually, because she has a lot of things she's hiding, and those color her thoughts and speech.

7. What do they dream about at night?
I'm not really sure. Honestly, this isn't something I or my characters focus on. I'd say she probably has mostly normal dreams. But sometimes she has nightmares about her mother's death--she was executed, or maybe nightmares about bad things happening to those she loves.

8. They've gone out for a "special meal". What would they eat?
Probably traditional food from her part of Kayakarme. She is from a coastal area, that doesn't support a great deal of agriculture but does engage in a lot of trade with the rest of her home country.  So, a special meal would be: rice paper rolls with shrimp, kelp, and noodles in them; sliced smoked salmon slivers, and dried peaches with crystallized ginger. This doesn't seem fancy, but it's special because it reminds her of Kayakarme.

9. What's at least one thing they want to do before they die?
Marry Ashlin. I know, boring, but she wants to prevent people from trying to dissolve their relationship, and marriage would help her do that. However, it wouldn't be easy to get a magistrate to agree to their marriage because Jor is a foreigner, and apparently a nobody noble, and Ashlin is the queen of Kaltewirin. So it's more of a 'do it before I die' thing than an easily accomplished thing. Also, Ashlin hasn't had the best experience with marriage, so she's reluctant to consider it.

10. Do they have any distinguishing or unique talents?
Jor is a deadly warrior with her staffs and daggers. She is also an excellent spy and spymaster because she is very good at lying with a straight face and veiling her true intentions.

Do you guys want to know more?
What do you think of Jor now that you've learned more about her?
What are your characters like?
